Detroit tru trac...

Anyone used one? Liked it?

I want to use my stock 2.73 gears on it, so I will get the 3.08 and down one. But was wondering if I will have to re-shim gears and reset the mesh. I dont have the expieriance or tools to reshim gears.

I want to be able to drop out my open pumpkin and unbolt ring gear then bolt on the ring to new carrier then put in car add LS additive and some 80w-90. Nothing else. Can I do this?

Re: Detroit tru trac...

your going to have to at least check/re-shim the carrier bearings. And the ring gear is pressed on, you can get it off without a press, but you need one to get it back on, as well as install the bearing on the new pumpkin as they usually dont come with bearings.

I dont know what your feelings are toward 4th gen rears, but you can probably pick up a 4th gen rear with the zexel posi, which is the same idea, for about the same cost as the detroit tru-trac and get better brakes as a bonus.

sometihng to look into

You could do that but your axle would probably last about 15 minutes under load before it ate itself and destroyed the gears at a minimum and more than likely destroyed the LSD at the same time. Like 86 said either get a 4th gen rear and stick the tires out further or your probably going to have to take the car to a professional to have an LSD added. Backlash and preload are not something that you should just guess at, cause 99 out of 100 times it will come back to haunt you if you do.

Re: Detroit tru trac...

I like my detroit true trac....
But yea, you'll need to check the pattern. If you can get the new posi back into the case without destroying those goofy cast iron shims (best of luck...) then it'll probably still fit fine. Probably is the key word, if not you need a shim kit.
You can't do this with the rear end in the car, well you could, but it would be a BAD DAY to say the least.

And why bother with 2.73 gears?!? Swap those to junkyard 3.42/3.73's while you're there, you got friggen overdrive anyway!

Yea, My camaro gets bad eneough gas mileage anyways and I like my 2.73s. Just need posi. I spin all the way through first at the strip. I will have to start hunting for a 4th gen rear I guess. I dont want the rear tires to stick out though.

Looks like my best bet is get the tru trac professionally installed.
