There's nothing special about a HO rear end. It's the same as every other third gen rear end. If it's a 9 bolt instead of a 10 bolt then it can take a little more abuse. I was putting close to 500 HP through my 9 bolt with no problems.

Well, you could definately find a buyer for it, then. I was searching for your 1984 HO's axle (3.73/open/drum), but found a 1984 TA's axle (3.73/posi/disc) instead, and bought it on the spot.

I'll bet you guys who broke your rears had 5 speeds (or at least a manual tranny of some kind). Either that, or you were reving the engine up in neutral and slamming it into gear, and busted trannys along with the rears.

Check out the ultimate 10 bolt build up article. It's got good stuff in it. If you've got an auto tranny, you need to be putting over 400 equines to the wheels to threaten a properly built and setup 10 bolt (which you can do for a lot less green than what a 9 bolt or specialty 9" or 12 bolt would cost you).

This is true five7. There are some high 10/low 11 sec cars w/ 7.5's - properly prepped. I have a 12sec 82 Z28 with Richmond 4.10's and an Auburn mini-spool that has over 250 passes on it. I've always said I'd replace it w/ a better rear when it broke, but It hasn't died yet.

That makes me feel better but I hope my race prepped 10 bolt can hold up to the big block torque.

I'm in the same frame of mind. If the diff lasts, I'll keep it. If it breaks, I go with a 9".

Yep, my car is a five speed. I wasn't too hard on it but I never babied it either.

IMHO, why mess with it. After buying all of the parts and paying someone to "do it right" Every time you launch, a little voice in the back of your head says "I wonder when that 7.5" gear is going to grenade?" "How about those spindly little axles?" "Will my car still drive straight on 3 wheels when one of those C clips lets go?"

Sorry, not me, went though it twice. Maybe it wasn't done right. Who cares. Now I have a Ford 9" built by Moser. Yes, it cost a small fortune. Probably about the same as setting up two 7.5's. On the upside, whether I run slicks, spray or a big block, I will never hear that little voice again.

how did you mange to break the rearend with the stock driveline?? the 3.73s are the only part of my car not showing signs of wear, after counless abusive "stunts" (I got in when I was 17)the marks are still embedded in the pavment all over the northshore area in MA.

I believe it was deflection in the carrier or the case. Either way the first rear broke a spider gear and wore the heck out of the ring gear. The second broke 3 teeth off of the ring gear. In both rears enough metal was thrown around that the ring and pinion, carrier and bearings needed to be replaced.

Lets face it, there are plenty of posts on this board from people who have broken one of these rear ends with minimal if any mods. This is a notoriously weak spot on our cars. You guys that are making them work, all the power to ya'. But, chances are, its just a matter of time.
