Friend's 4-speed-OD automatic, in a FWD car...

...does anyone know the model # of this transmission? (Like 700r4, etc..?)

He just had it replaced last year, and said yesterday it's slipping & not catching, and that it won't downshift when he floors it. I thought "TV cable", but I don't know if his FWD trans has one. Oh it's a Pontiac Bonneville, by the way, I think '87 or '88?

Oops, thought you said 97 or 98. 4T60 then, non-electronic, don't know if it has a TV cable or not.

4T60 with a kickdown cable, eh? Thanks for the info! Is this trans pretty close "inside" to our 4L60, but just sideways?

Great info, Apeiron. However, he said '87 or '88 Bonneville. That will be a 3.8 liter V6.

I think they're called 4T60 in '89's - '91's (what I've personally owned - suffering from brain fade). I think the '85's - '88's were TH125C, and I know they were famous for being weak (based on my dad's experiences), whatever they were called.

The designation is stamped into the pan, by the way. Put it up on ramps or jack it up and you'll see it.

Yeah sorry, could only find the exact info on the 4T60 E, but it should be the same as the 4T60 except for the electronic control. It only shows applications up to 3.4 L because the current 3.8 cars are using the 4T65E.

440T4 is the old name for the 4T60 isn't it?

Anyway, there were a LOT of recalls for those transaxles, you might get lucky and find out it's a well known problem.

One problem though; any recall wouldn't matter. His original trans was replaced by a rebuilt one. He says it's acting just like his other one did before it died; now he's left with only 1st and 2nd, no more 3rd and 4th.

I had to rebuild the tranny in the wife's Oldsmobile. It was a 4T60E. It was doing the same thing as your friends tranny is doing. I went through it 3 times before I found that the valve body had a hairline crack in it.
