What did GM change on newer 700r4's?

I have been told that the newer 700r4 transmissions are stronger and much more desirable than the older units. Could an old tranny be updated?

I know that pre-84 1/2 had a smaller 27 spline input shaft and 84 1/2 and up have a larger 30 spline input shaft. In 1987 they did some other modifications to make them stronger but I can't find my referances right now.

They upgraded to a 10 vane pump instead of a 7 vane, and some stronger bands or clutches, and some other stuff. Jason, ask my dad, he will know for sure. And you can definitely upgrade an 84 and up 30 spline trans to the newer specs.

I have one from an 83 Z28. The trans. is fine with no known problems, I just wondered if it was worth anything or if I should look for a newer unit to use. I am only wanting a daily driven drivetrain from it, not a hot rod, so I may be ok... I have my 91 to drive hard 8^)

The '82s were really crappy being the first year for them, and many were recalled. You didn't even try to fix them, just replace them. Over the years, they were constantly improved. '87 being the biggest year. One of the biggest changes in '87 was the addition of the auxillary valvebody. This requires a different case to accomodate this, therefore is not interchangable. Most of the internals are interchanable, but would probably be in your best interest to find as late model as you can (prior to '93, after '87)
