until there is no slack in the bearing or a little bit past it's previous position. mark the location before you take it off.

i usually use 3/4 drive tools for the pinion nut. you'll need to make something to hold the pinion yoke. i have a 4' piece of 3"x5/16 flat bar. i transferd holes for the 12 bolts, old 10 bolts and the 7 1/2 10 bolts. just bolt it to the pinion yoke and put the socket through a hole in the center.

The best way is to measure total preload with a beam style inch pound torque wrench, then when done, retighten untill you get the same abount of preload. The bearings need to be preloaded to keep the pinion from for and aft movement, and since they have been driven for so long with that preload, not getting it close to where it was will have your rearend humming Dixie before you make it around the block. You may use an impact to remove the nut, but NEVER to tighten it, not even to run it down. You will impact load the bearings and they will be shot before you ever finish the job.

Oh yeah, if you have a good sense of feel, you can just turn the companion flange (yoke) before and after to see if they feel the same.
