necessity of the Trans Speed Input sensor on the 4L80E

Looking at doing a 60E to 80E swap and retaining the stock PCM and harness and so on, just transfer over the necessary 80E settings to the 60E code to run it. I am running a MAF setup and it uses the TIS input to the PCM for the vehicle speed input. I want to retain my original VSS wiring and only use the rear speed sensor on the 80E. Will this work? What will be required to make it work or is it just as simple as keeping the 60E code with 80E solenoid state and gear ratio settings and completely ignoring the TIS?
