T56 wiring problem

Ugh, Today we were putting the wiring together on the transmission, we only found two, well, we got the one that hooks up for the reverse light.

I have a 91 RS camaro, and I found that it said I have a electronically driven speedometer, but my speedometer isnt working

But I cant figure out where this senor goes into on the tranny, I do know its the VSS sensor. but I cant get it in either the two ports on the back on the tranny where the shifter would be. there would be one right next to the shifter, pointing forward, as if you were sitting in the car, and a port that is pointing straight down from the tranny. well, I cant get the sensor in the port that is point straight down, just wont fit in it. the port that is sitting straight forward, Does go in but Im afraid to put it in, because I couldnt see. it didnt feel right.

(I converted from a 5 speed to a 96 camaro LT1 6 speed.)

My problem is I need my odometer to work, so I know how many miles I have on my new engine, It still needs to be broken in.

I need help, and this worrys me.

This is what the sensor I was talking about:

Re: T56 wiring problem

Are you trying to plug your T5 wiring into the T56?

If so, it wont work.... Even if it did, it wont read correctly. The T56 outputs a higher number of "pulses" to register your speed than a T5.

My 1987 firebird needed a converter from dakota digital to convert the number of pulses. But aparently the 91-92 cars (especially camaro's) are a bit different. Something to do with a speed buffer? (im not an expert on the subject, maybe someone else can chime in).

The connector on the passenger side of the T56 is the reverse lights.
The connector pointing horizontally to the driver side (on the driver side) is the reverse lockout.
The connector pointing straight down next to the shifter is the VSS.

I would start by getting some T56 wiring, and going from there. I think almost any parts store should be able to help you. I know AC delco has a huge listing, might be faster if you just looked up the part number and went down to get the plugs.

Hope that helps.

Re: T56 wiring problem

Ok, That helps me alot. Thank you,
Im kinda curious about the dakota digital, do they still make them?
I couldnt find it.
That sensor I had shown in the picture, does that hook up to the VSS? I couldnt get it to go in the VSS port, it didnt want to go in and I wasnt gonna force it.
Im sorta thinking I might have to go for a different speedometer.
(Not gonna like the idea, because I cant mount it in the dash.)

Re: T56 wiring problem

Oops, i described the connectors wrong. the one i called the reverse lockout is the CAGS one. Reverse lockout is above the VSS. (as the pic shows).

Heres the dakota digital.
