swapping WC T-5 from auto

I am trading my beyond dead 200c in favor of the WC T-5 from a '91 RS. I want to ramain smog legal, and so I want to keep my computer. For the speed sensor to work, I need to change the electronic speed sendor unit in the tranny. My question is, is this possible? And if so, where do I buy the mechanical unit, and what do I do?

Or, can I keep the electric drive unit, and bypass the vehicle speed sensor or something?

If i understand the situation correctly, you're swapping in a t-5 with an electronic vss in place of the 200c that had a mechanical speedo drive.

The 82 has a VSS as well. If you have cruise control i believe the VSS in integrated into the cruise module on the drivers side of the engine compartment (someone correct me if i am wrong here.) If the signal that the new VSS will put out is the same as the old one, you should be able to just splice into the old VSS wires and connect your new VSS. You may need to get a VSS buffer (located near the ECM.)

If you do use this setup, you'll also have to change the speedometer head to an electronic one, and you will need the buffer box to drive the electronic speedometer.

Another option (possibly easier) would be to find a t-5 tail housing from a mechanical speedo t-5 and swap that in. You would need to use the appropriate speedo gear to calibrate the speedometer.

I'm in the middle of a transmission swap, a electronic t-5 in place of a mechanical TH350. I have a donor car with all the parts needed so I'm swapping all of the electronic VSS componenets in to the 82.

Kevin, I don't want to trade it, just make it work. Thanks anyway.

cfabe, that's what I'm wondering, if the two vss's have the same out put. If they do, then I'll be happy, and I'll get a later model, 140 mph speedo. But if I can't splice in the speedo, I really don't need to know how fast I'm going anyway. Do I need to change the whole tailshaft, or could I just swap the mentioned piece? If I do have to swap it all, Are they both the same?

In your first post you were looking for a mechanical speedo hookup. I meant, find someone with a mechanical who needs an electronic, and trade them. It'd be much easier than trying to put an electronic speedo in an 82, I think. But I've never done it.

Yeah, it would be easier, but I want to keep the WC-T5. I don't want a regular T-5. This tranny is really nice.

No no no... You arent swapping transmissions. You are just swapping the speedo sensor. You keep your world class T5, but you get a cable speedo unit for an 88 or 89 Camaro. Its a direct swap. Tom Keliher was looking for an electronic one, last I heard.

Thank you for setting me straight, Kevin. I didn't know that you could do that. I saw another post about it. Are they all the same size? Could you give Tom my e-mail address, or direction to me, if I can't find him first? Thank you for all of your help.
