89 RS rear axle change to limited slip disc brake

Hello,

I've an '89 RS with 5.0 and want to change out existing standard rear axle (2.73:1) with same gear ratioed limited slip rear axle with disc brakes. Does anyone know what models of camaro came equpped this way and if the axle will bolt into my RS?

Also, will there need to be any brake master cylinder changes due to change in config in the rear end?

Welcome to TGO. The question is one that's asked frequently, so for more thorough info you may wish to search. The drum master is fine. Many members have left the proportioning valve as well with no complaint; others have swapped the valve for a disc/disc valve. You'll also require e-brake cables.

Re: 89 RS rear axle change to limited slip disc brake

Thanks for the info James. GM came out with equiment codes on their axles, would it be the best to search for a rear end with the equipment code that matches the options I'm looking for? I realize the disc brakes would be obvious but the limited slip would be less noticeabe - unless all rear ends with disc brakes were equipped with limited slip.

My first choice is to find a used one, but I'm also interested in aftermarket equipment. Do you know of any links to vendors for aftermarket rear ends?

Thanks again,

You might check RPO's: GU2 = 2.73 and G80 = limited slip. That said, the RPO doesn't guarantee that what was once in the car is still there. Not all disc brake cars were limited slip equipped. The following may be helpful, if you're forced to pull the diff cover and take a gander:

The numbers are stamped on the ring and pinion:

41 : 15 = 2.73
41 : 14 = 2.93
40 : 13 = 3.08
42 : 13 = 3.23
41 : 12 = 3.42
41 : 11 = 3.73

You might check with Spohn, a board sponsor, for after market.

Re: 89 RS rear axle change to limited slip disc brake

Thanks again for the info, one last question, what year model range of rear axles will bolt into an 89 RS? I'm thinking 1985 -90 but I'm not sure, the Haynes manual I have really doesn't have a lot to say about it.

Thanks,
Chris

Any thirdgen will bolt up (however, 89-92 would be best because of the PBR calipers and larger discs). Fourthgens will fit as well, though the rear end is 2" wider per side than the thirdgen. There may be some e-brake cable issues as well. And, of course, if you change gearing, you'll need to swap in the correct drive and/or driven gear to keep the speedo correct.

In '89 or '90 they went from 26 spline to 28 spline axles.

True (and another reason to seek those years out), but the rear end will swap as above.

Re: 89 RS rear axle change to limited slip disc brake

When searching for a rear end, especially a 2:73 gear ratio one, just call Junkyards and ask, when i was searching for my rear i always got this answer. "well i have plenty of 3.08 and 2.73 disc brake posi rears". I would encourage you to try and get some taller gears, maybe some 3.23" or 3.42"s.
