12-bolt question
I blew up the 10 bolt in my car, and I need to replace it. Are there any older musclecars that have the same mounts that I could do a bolt in swap with?
Or if I cannot do that what are some reputable 12-bolt housings that I could buy new?
Also If I go to the 12-bolt can I keep the same length driveshaft?

There are no 12 bolts out of other cars that will bolt in directlry in our cars. You have to weld on brackets for the torque arm and LCA's which can be a PITA. Eaton and Dana make 12 blots for our cars that are ready to bolt in but they are pricey, around $1200-$1600.

Ahhh. It were only that easy more third gens would be driving around with 12 bolts in them. The only production diff that will directly fit into a third gen is from another third gen. That leaves you with 3 choices. A 10 bolt 7.5/7.625. A 9 bolt 7.75. Or if you're lucky enough to find one, a Dana44 8.5.
Aftermarket bolt-ins include 12 bolts and ford 9". They all run around the same price. Expect to pay around $2000 for a complete bolt-in diff like these.
If you can find a 12 bolt from a first gen f-body, you could use it if you decide to fabricate a new rear suspension with something like ladder bars or a 4-link.

Is a 9 bolt any stronger than a ten? I know about limited gear availability for it, but i am not sure about what a 9 bolt can handle. Thanks,
John

All my best results (see above) were with a 3.27 geared 9 bolt. I finally switched to a 10 bolt because I needed lower gearing.
