700R4 Issues
700R4 Issues
Anyone know how much horsepower a 700R4 (V8) tranny can handle, safely? I am going to be sticking one behind my 383 (horsepower as yet unknown), and I want to make sure it will be there for awhile. Also, what upgrades would you guys recommend for the tranny? I have looked at shift kits from B&M and TransGo, and I think I am going to go with the TransGo High Performance Street complete kit from Jegs. I have seen others that have "Corvette servos" on their trannys - what does this mean? What other things should I do to the tranny? As for a convertor, I am looking for one that engages at around 1000-1500 rpm, but all I can find are convertors that engage around 2000 or higher. I don't want to be stuck with the stock convertor. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance!

There is no certain point to what a 700R4 can handle. If you put wear & Tear on it, of course its going to gernade. If you get a tranny cooler and small stall and HARDENED EVERYTHING itll be good for what you're going to make.
Also, how many splines does the tranny have? It is an 86. I need to know this to get a TC - I think it is a 30 - right/wrong?

Wasn't the only year for a spline count change in 1985? The makers of the TC should have that info anyway...
