specing a rear end to send to the uk

Hi People

Ive been looking over the moser site and after reading several threads on here i'm after a complete rear end package from them. Im after a set up that i can forget about breaking in future because it will be bomb proof. So 35 spline should see me right. My question is which rear end to go for? Ford or GM>? and also what bits exactly will i need so that when i get it shipped its all there ready to be put in? I know it sounds lazy but i dont want to miss anything out. Do they do complete kits? I can see housing and axles, but i'll still have to add the diff, gears etc. Its for an 87 Iroc, and yes i know I cant use the rear brakes either. So if you guys were ordering one, what would you order from scratch?

Thanks. AL

I've been a Moser dealer for about 10 years so I've been through this many times. First I need to know what you will be doing with the car. If it will be a street car then a spool is out. If it will be used for road racing then you will want to use something like the Trutrac. If it will be street/strip then the Eaton posi is good. Most of the time the 12 bolt is best. Usually the 9 inch Ford is overkill and just added weight. 33 spline axles in the 12 bolt is enough for some very serious power. So what will you be doing with it, how much power will it have and what transmission?

The 12 bolt comes assembled. except you will have to put the brakes and axles in. Moser sells Wilwood brake kits, which you can order with the rear end. They also sell drive shafts and yokes, if you need to upgrade those.

Awesome. Well it will be a combination of the 2 so street and strip. I like to over engineer things so that I dont have to worry about them later. Ive got my eye on a 383 with around 500 horses. Bit of a Nitrous fan so at the moment it's just a 305tpi with 100 shot. Obviously a 383 will take more so I would envisage around 800 torques to be on the safe side. Would ideally like a manual box one day (possibly a borg warner), but will worry about that later. Have got subframe connectors in now aswell. Its too tempting for most to throw in a big engine but for me I want it to be able to take it first.

Id like to keep it lsd (posi) but with a high % of slip. Infact a lockable one would be better. Driveshaft in future will have to be upgraded aswell as yokes to add strength. I wrecked my stock axle a year or so ago and the rebuild hurt as they ripped me off on the parts and I just want to cover this base. That and bin my 2.73 gears.

You can get a 33 spline Detroit Locker in the 12 bolt. I have a Detroit Locker in my Camaro and a Power Trax in my truck. They make noise and can be a little jerky, but they work great when you need them. The Eaton can be set up with the 22 disc clutch set and 800 pound springs to make it lock up better. You should go with the 1350 u joints right now so you don't have to change them later.

I still think that the 12 bolt will be good enough for what you want. I built a 30 spline 12 bolt with a stock Eaton posi for a guy with a 383, 6-71 blower and 4 speed. The car has run 9.30s and the 12 bolt is doing fine. It's Tim Meredith's black '66 Nova that's in Popular Hot Rodding this month.

so do you build rear ends then? I dont mind having to have one assembled here but if bits dont fit it'll be a nightmare. Its hard being in the 51st state :-(. There must be some good ends already over here though

I usually don't build the Moser rear ends, unless it's some kind of special order. When I sell one I usually let Moser assemble it. If you order one from Moser it will be mostly assembled. All you will do is install the brakes and axles, paint it and fill it with oil. You can also order it powder coated for $250. If you order a 9 inch then you will also have to install the chunk in the housing, but the gears are always set up when you get it. You won't have to mess with the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash.

I shipped 2 Moser 12 bolt rear ends to some guys in Poland. They needed something special, so I put them together myself. They went into the first and second fastest cars in Europe (AWD Corvette and AWD Typhoon). I stopped building rear ends in Oct., but I might be getting back into it soon.
