Questions about a stall converter...

I have a Pro-Built Street/Strip 4L60 with a 12" 2400RPM ACT stall converter w/LockUp that was custom from Dana per my engine/cam, & gear specs. I have 3.42's in the rear BTW. I also have a 30,000GVW tranny fluid cooler.

Anyway, The tranny took a dump at exactly 100,000 miles and I plan on rebuilding it using Dana's latest kit. When it comes to the TQ converter though I have no idea what I want to do.

At first I wanted an 8" 2400RPM stall converter w/LockUp. I knew my cooler could handle the additional heat and I wanted a light rotating mass.

Honestly, I am worried about fuel economy. I do allot of highway driving and city driving. I'm now debating on maybe just going with a stock replacement converter to help with mileage or maybe and 8" version of a stock converter. What is the stall RPM of a stocker anyway?

Thoughts?

That ain't going to happen. For such a low stall, you'll probably be looking at a 12" or maybe a tight 10". I doubt you could find a useful 8" below 4000 stall speed.

Picking a stall speed that's too low will be just as bad as one that is too high. Converter stall depends mainly on the camshaft's advertised duration. Not the .050" spec.

What's the advertised duration of the cam? If you don't know then you'll never know what converter will work best.

Re: Questions about a stall converter...

I have an 8" ATI that is a 3000 stall. It flashes up between 3500-4000 and grabs well at a cruise.

Was 800 bucks though, how long would it take to make that back in fuel savings?

Why not go with a t-56? Sell the trans and converter and with the money saved from the new converter, it should almost cover a t-56.....

The car is a daily driver in the city so I'd rather keep the auto. I have other cars with manuals that are fun cars.

Re: Questions about a stall converter...

From a friend with a GN I just picked up his Vigilante "GM Racer" 9.5" lock-up Multi-Disc 3 plate 3200RPM stall converter.

According to Vigilante's web site, they make these as low as 2400RPM stall. He's going to find his original receipt and we are going to send it off to use the "free 1-time stall change" that he's entiltled to for buying it.
