Shifter for 88-92 formula?

i have a very interesting question. i have a89 formula and i want to use a console megashifter for this car but they say it wont work with 88-92 formulas and i was wondering why and how to remedy this tricky problem??? its a b&m shifter.

1989 firebird formula

Mods: converted from T.B.I. to a carburator 305 to a 350. Flowmater exhaust,hedman shortie hedders,202 heads,350 horse cam,bored.40 over, Edlebrock torker2 intake.

Future mods 400 performer rpm intake (polished) and 600 edlebrock carb, comp roller cam, and way better heads. orpossibly a 383 stroker?

I read that somewhere also. Something to do with the location of the hatch-release. I have the Megashifter, and it works great. I got it shipped to my door for 136 or so from www.carparts.com using the discount coupon on www.camaroZ28.com
