700R4 in a 82 Z28?
700R4 in a 82 Z28?
Howdy all,
This is my first post here.
I have a 200C tranny in my 82 Z-28.
I want overdrive and the 700R4 looks like the
only real option.
Has anyone ever made this swap?
I know I'll need a shorter driveshaft, a different cross-member and a different shifter/cable.
What about the speedometer drive?
Is the elec plug for the TCC the same?
Can I use the kickdown cable linkage to operate the TV cable on the 700R4?
What else am I forgetting?
Thx,
John C.
P.S. Cool site!!

2. You can use a crossmember, driveshaft (or aluminum), and shift plate from any '83-'92 F-body.
3. It's mechanical, so no problems.
4. I would think so, never seen a 200C real closely.
5. Use th TV cable from the 700 trans, should come with it.
6. Yeah, the torque converter.
There are two diiferent trans, 27 spline ('83-'late '84) and 30 spline (late '84 newer). But from what I have been told, they are equally strong for street cars. Just the 30-spline has more TC choices.

Don't forget about the torque arm bracket.
You can either use a tailshaft off a third gen 700, or get a conversion kit from B&M or hurst, which you might what to do anywise, since it comes with other stuff for the crossmember etc...
It's a bit more of a pain to do the 200c to 700, than it is to do the 200c to 350. However there's plenty of people that have done on this board. Sorry I went from 200c to 350.
Good Luck,
Ron

The main problem will be the crossmember. A later crossmember won't bolt in because the subframe doesn't have the provisions in the correct location. The bolt holes need to be back a few inches in the subframe. I've done this swap. I modified(cut and welded) the current crossmember to fit the 700r4. Also did the th200c to th350(much easier). I got my 700r4 from a astro van and it already had the provisions to mount the torque arm. I had to cut a few inches off the torque arm because it covers up the speedo hook-up. B and M shifter corrected the shifter problems. TCI controls the lock-up of the tcc. With 3.73's, the overdrive is much nicer on the highway. Any more questions, send me an email(on my web site).

My donor car was an '86, so I was able to use all factory parts. Except, as 82camaro says, there are no crossmember holes in the proper place in the '82 frame (even if you have the proper crossmember). I simply elongated a drain hole at the end of the frame on each side for access, then put nuts & washers inside the frame for the back two holes.
Having all the factory pieces certainly made it easier (crossmember, driveshaft, torque arm, TV cable & carb bracket, cooler lines). I would recommend the same.
Your current speedo drive should work, by the way, as well as the TCC connector. You'll probably have to match the speedo drive gear(s) for your rear axle ratio.
