Can anyone do a tranny rebuild?
Ok, I can get a rebuild kit from a local dealership for $130. I have a broken 89 700-R4 thats waiting to be put into my IROC. Is it possible for me to do a tranny rebuild? I have already disassembled the entire tranny, every piece is out. All I should need to do it put the new parts in, replacing the worn out ones and it should work, right? Why couldn't I be able to do this rebuilt myself? Has anyone else done a self rebuild?
Of course you can rebuild that 700-r4! All
you need is parts, tools, a rebuild manual
and a heaping helping of confidence. And just
a bit of mechanical aptitude! LOL!
If I can rebuild one, so can you!Good luck.

EO273, wow, that's pretty cool (disassembling the trans). I hope to do that one day; see if you can find the Haynes manual called "GM Transmission Overhaul Manual". It covers the TH-200-4R, TH-350, TH-400, and TH-700r4. The Haynes book really lays the stuff out in "plain" terms, with a picture-by-picture procedure for the rebuild! I found mine at Pep Boys for $16; you can also search the internet for 'em. The Haynes book also tells you what tools you "really" need, and what tools you can build or ignore.
The GM Service manual is the best "tech" spot for a rebuild. If you don't have one and don't want to put the cash up, you can get an ATSG (auto trans service group) manual for the 700r4. Go to http://www.naparts.com , call their #, and ask them for the ATSG book for your year of 700r4. This book is basically the trans section of the GM service manual. What's nice about the ATSG book is that it adds GM's technical service bulletins at the end as a reference.
I have all three (Haynes, ATSG, GM Serv Manual). They've all got their good points.
