86 700-R4 guts into a 89 700-R4 tranny?
86 700-R4 guts into a 89 700-R4 tranny?
Ok, I have a broken 89 700-R4 with a shattered round gear cage thing (the round thing that holds the planetary gears in) and now my 86 700-R4 is begining to not shift until I hit 6,500 RPM. I really need to get one working tranny out of the two and I was wondering if the guts on the inside of the trannies are the same? I plan on rebuilding the 89 over rebuilding the 86 as I heard the 89 has a better design. Any input? Thanx?

Owner of a 1989 IROC Camaro, a.k.a. "The Babe Magnet". Painted a cheap metallic blue that chips off all too easily and covers over the IROC decals on the doors, also has non-leaking T-tops, ps, pw, power rear hatch, working A/C. Mods: SLP intake runners, gutted MAF sensor, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, modified air spoil, 3.2? posi rear end.
Broken stuff: rear spoiler brake light, driver side lock, power antenna, tilt steering, rear end bushings, cracked passanger side ground effect, washer fluid tab, leaking exhaust and a rotted through muffler that sparks when the car bottoms out while driving like any 17 year old does.

A lot of the '86 and '89 700-r4 parts will
interchange. I recommend rebuilding the '89
because it has a few more upgrades. Most
transmission shops are willing to inspect
suspect parts and give you good advice if
you are planning to rebuild it yourself.

I wouldn't do it... the 86 700R4 ain't that great. The tranny become much better in 87, and was improved every year until 1993, when the 4L60E came out.
