You are right there is a aftermarket version GM aftermarket replacement T-56 six speed is designed to replace the T5 five speed in the 82-92 Camaros and Firebirds. This transmission can be used for many other applications with small modifications.
Gear-ratio spread: 2.97:1, 1.94:1, 1.35:1, 1.00:1, 0.84:1, 0.62:1 forward, and 3.28:1 reverse. The tranny uses a adapter plate to bolt up to the t5 bellhousing. It has a longer input shaft to make up for the difference of the plate. To use the aftermarket t56 you have to shorten the driveshaft and The long stabalizer arm 2 inches. THe tranny is rated at 400 lbs of torque instead of 450 like the production t56 because the aftermarket tranny has the lower gears. The shifter will come out in the right place, You wont have to cut a thing. The tranny has a different tailshaft with a mechanical speedo to make it even easier. The only drawback is 2300. I am also in need of a t56 but cant decide wich way to go Aftermarket t56, production t56, or find a way to use a viper t56. Here is a good place to get the aftermarket t56 should you decide to go with it http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/BorgWarner/bwt56.html
