7.5 Rearend Question

I am about to change the gear ratio in my 82 Z28. I already have a 7.5 w/ 4.11's that I have raced for a few seasons with no trouble, but I am changing engines and I'm going w/ 4.56's. I am going to leave the rearend alone that I have in the car now, in case I break one during the season, I 'll still be able to compete for points. I have 2 rearends, an '89 rearend with factory 2.73 gears, and the other is a '90 rearend with 3.42 gears. I know that the the 2-series carriers and the 3-series carriers are diiferent, but which one is stronger?? Since I haven't bought anything yet, I want to build the stronger of the two. BTW, I'll be using an Auburn minispool like my the rearend I have now. Thanx

as far as i know the only differance is the thickness of the flange the ring gear sits on. if both were 28 spline axles i don't think i'd worry about it too much either way.

the thickness of the flange is the same, it is just the height of the carrier that is different. that is all.

Neither of the rearends are taken apart, just the rear cover has been removed to check the gears. Shouldn't all '89 and '90 rearends be 28 spline?? The one that is in my car now is a '84 and its a 26 spline.

So when you say the height of the carrier is different, I'm assuming you mean the higher (numerically) rearend has a taller carrier, therefore meaning more material, right??
