Along with a couple of other members here, I'm doing the same swap. Just learn everything that you can about the tranny, clutch, and how it works first. Then it won't seem like such a big ordeal. What you need to do is get EVERYTHING from a donor car. Even if it is broken, get it, so you know what to replace. Then go for it. One word of advice: Use a third gen tranny. The clutch is hydrolic, so mounting is straight forward,(not to mention, they came from the factory that way). Any more ?s, look at some of the many other threads on this topic. Some even list exactly what you need.

Go to the dragstrip and take some time to walk through the pits area. Check out the really fast cars (not the 12-14 second cars) and ask the owners what they have automatic or stick?
then you will have all the answer that you need on this question.

An automatic has approx 0.5 second advantage in a streetrace against a stick because of excess reaction time with the stick. You won't notice this at the track because you have the christmas tree to anticipate reaction with.

just my input.

But with a stick, you put more power to the ground.

Also, road racing is very hard to do with an auto, less ratios to choose from.

But if you want to talk drag racing, throw in a power glide. That will be what the fastest guys at the track are running.
