popping out of second gear

ok guys my old trans went and i put in one i got from a junkyard, well as it turns out the one from the junkyard wont engage first gear, just grinds, like its not all the way in, so in order for me to drive my car(until i find another tranny)i had to pull out in second gear, and this didnt really pose that much of a problem cause of my 3.45 rear gear, well now my tranny pops out of second occasionally when pulling away from a stoplight or something like that, any ideas? thanks in advance.

Either the 2nd gear synchro or 2nd gear itself is shot on your trans. It needs a rebuild. Same thing happened to mine. And probably 1st gear synchro is shot too from your description.

If you're doing it yourself and you have a good manual, it can be done in a day. If you're taking it to somewhere else, it depends on their schedule.
