How many bolt holes on the actual ring gear for

a 9 bolt rear and on a 10 bolt rear (not the number of bolts on the cover)

There's 10 on a 10-bolt. Don't know about the 9-bolt.

The names "10 bolt" and "12 bolt" are derived from the number of ring gear teeth. I think GM made the cover have the same number of cover bolts for easy reference? Anyway, the names indicate # of ring gear bolts.
