Which Clutch to Buy???

Okay. Situation, My buddy has an 87 Trans Am 5.0 TPI M5. His stock clutch is going out with around 160,000 miles. What is a good replacement clutch?

Car is a daily driver that will see some strip time and alot of city banging. The plans on the car are to put out around 300-400 HP in the future, so the clutch must be able to hold that much power.

The budget is around $300 at most and we are clueless to what is needed? Please include links with your suggestions.

Also, we would like to do it ourselves and we haven't done it before. We both have the time to do it, but are curious if it is doable as neither of u have any experience with clutches. Should we just pay and have a shop do it?

Re: Which Clutch to Buy???

I'd suggest a clutch kit, one that comes with disc, pressure plate, hardware, throwout bearing--and perhaps even a pilot bearing. You'll need to have you flywheel resurfaced. Summit has a kit for around $200 (SUM-700152), and I'm sure there are others. Double check the application. You and your bud can do it if an old geezer like me can. A bit of research beforehand will no doubt expedite the swap.

I doubt there's much between the two choices. The Ram includes a throwout bearing and an alignment tool for the price; those would add another $40+ to the CenterForce and put you over budget. Many members swear by Ram, others by CenterForce, but in most cases they've probably never run both to provide any real insight.

We were leaning towards the Ram, but it says the Centerforce has better gripping power.

Re: Which Clutch to Buy???

I used the same CFDF clutch when I had a T5 and I really liked it. I put a lot of miles on the car and it held up well to the high horsepower. When I finally took it out to install the T56, it still had plenty of life left. I can't say anything about the RAM though.
