Front seal of rear end is leaking, help

The front seal of the read end is leaking slightly. To replace this seal, do I have to remove the pinion from the rear end?

Can someone give me a procedure to cure my leak problem?

Side note: The 3.70 gears whine like hell on the coast down side. I have seen that you shim the pinion more to get rid of the coast side whine. Can anyone here confirm this?

I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and take care of both promblems at the same time.
Opinions appreciated.

Once the gears have 'worn-in' don't change the shims. Your wine will probably get worse if you do.
10 bolt instructions
remove driveshaft
mark nut location
remove big nut
remove yoke
pop seal out with screwdriver or seal puller
install new seal
install yoke
install big nut, tighten enough to remove any slack in the bearing(should be about where the mark is)
install driveshaft

82camaro,
Thanks for the help, I think that I will take your advice and change the seal only.

just so you know that is not the correct way to do this job. Notice that I didn't say you couldn't do it this way, just not correctly.

The correct way you have to remove the axles, ring gear/carrier and pinion. There is no way to establish proper pinion bearing preload while turning the ring gear/carrier. You will need a new pinion nut and crush sleeve as well.

Also, look at the seal surface of the pinion yoke it may have a grove worn in it. You should be able to get a repair sleeve from NAPA.

If you put the nut back where it used to be my marking it, you end up with about the same preload. I've done lots and lots of these on all kinds of GM cars and trucks. Never had a problem. You can do it the long way, but the end result is the same. Maybe 2% of what I've seen needed sleeved. Try the seal first.
