That depends on 3 things:
What do you have now?
What do you want when you're finished?
What can you do yourself?

i did one last summer:
200 richmond gears
100 richmond install kit
150 strange girddle
25 mobil 1 and gm friction modifier
few dollars to weld the axle tubes to the center section and spray paint, new brake lines
if you farm it out figure a mark up on the parts and 3 or 4 hours labor

Add to ede's post if you don't already have them:
I would recommend using a crush sleeve eliminator which is about $25, especially if you're going to set it up yourself.

- Posi or locker unit of your choice - $100 for SLP to $350 for Auburn, on up from there
- 28-spline axles - $250 from SUperior or Moser or the like, whatever they charge for a junk 10-bolt with discs at the boneyard
- 89-92 disc brake setup? see above
- $65 for Steve Spohn LCA attachment point lowering brackets to reduce / prevent wheel hop
- I paid $75 the other day to have a 10-bolt welded around the tubes, the spot welds filled in properly, and the LCA lowering brackets installed with a bracing plate; it may cost you less or more depending on lots of things, mine was totally empty and cleaned up
- $125 for sandblasting & powder coating if you want it to stay rust-free
I would recommend using a crush sleeve eliminator which is about $25, especially if you're going to set it up yourself.

This tech article should help you out. It even includes prices and links to get the parts.

What both ede and I were talking about, is where the tubes that the axles are in, plug into the center section of the housing. They're steel tubes but the center is cast iron. The factory puts 2 spot welds per tube which are weak and besides that the joints often leak. Welding all the way around them adds considerable stability to the whole system.

is it possible to do the welding with the rear end still on the car?
(I am guessing no, but might as well ask)
thanks
