lost overdrive

I've done numerous searches and there doesn't seem to be any responses to the issue I have. I recently lost 2 D and OD all I had was first and reverse. I searched on here and decided to check the governor gear...ended up having broken teeth. I replaced it with a new gear I got out of a camaro in the junkyard. Now I have all but overdrive. While im in overdrive its like its a neutral and i rev up all the way until the rpm would match if I put it in drive, and then it takes off.

In the process of figuring out where the governor gear was located, I accidently removed the servo, but I reinstalled that with no problem. I was just wondering if anyone would have any idea as to how I would be able to get OD back. Thank you all for your time!

Re: lost overdrive

unhook the kickdown cable from the carb and jerk on it a few times but dont loose your adjustment. Old ones some times get stuck and will do wierd stuff

I've lost two700R-4s this way. If that trick doesn't work, then the thing is toast. It'll hafta come out of the car.

Re: lost overdrive

I tugged on the cable and nothing changed. even if every other gear works fine and shifts just right do you think i'd need a new tranny? everything worked fine until the governor gear broke.

Re: lost overdrive

Well if you lost OD. here was my problem. my tranny i had in my camaro before replacing it. Lost 1st 2nd and D but OD worked. i adjusted the detent cable it worked for a while. well what caught my eye on this is that you mentioned you feel like in nuetral until u reved high enough to move. Mine became a bad tranny. it prolly wouldnt of gone bad if the torque converter was good. but in my case it was teh torque converter and the transmissions rear bearings gone. reason i know this and dind't take it apart is that the input shaft when i pulled it out was not in the center it was laying on the casing after the drive shaft came out. so i seen if any play was there and there was alot. so torque converter was the problem and it killed the tranny. idk if it is the same for you. but when the torque converter goes junk it will spill metal shavings in the transmission breaking stuff like the governor ect.. i hope this helps you. but sounds like what you need to do is either rebuild or buy a rebuilt tranny. I got my rebuilt tranny for 200 bucks off of ebay with 200 shipping so just look around or pay the extra money to get it rebuilt.
