Locking my Rear?

Hey All,

I got 1983 SC that originally had a 2.8L V6, according to the tech section, mine having the stock 3 speed, my rear end should be a non-posi 3.08 gears, I really don't know much about doing any work on my rear axle at all, or for that matter, don't really know much about rear ends in general.

I would like to lock up the rear end on my camaro, the gearing i'm not too worried about right now, but would like to have some sort of posi.

guess my question is, what are my options?

Re: Locking my Rear?

$350-$500 depending on style.
I think other things are probably higher priority to you eh?

Re: Locking my Rear?

7.5" 10 bolt rear end
1982-1988 Camaro/Firebird/Astrovan/S10
26 spline axles

2 series carrier ( fits 3.08 and lower numerical gears).

Then choose what you like. Realistically there's only a few choices:

- Detroit true-trac - $350
- Power trax - $400
- Auburn base model - $450 or something
- Auburn pro - $550 or something
- Eaton basic - $450
- Eaton pro - $550
- Detroit gear locker - $500

Might be a few others, and some of the ones listed may not exist. Do a search on each of those keywords on THIS FORUM, to see what the differences are. The eaton/auburn are clutch style, powertrax doesn't require you to remove your existing carrier, true trac is like the torsen style for 4th gen camaros, locker is a true gear locker (click-click-click-click-click-click- around corners...)

etc etc.

Re: Locking my Rear?

for around $350 plus shipping, you can get a conversion-style locker so you don't have to pull the diff and ring gear out. You'll need the 26-spline version.
As your car wasn't a Z28, it probably has drum brakes back there. This gives you alot of options. Such as getting a complete axle assembly from a salvage yard. Around here, it's $75.00 plus you pull it yourself. This is a great option because if you break it, you can reinstall your 3.08:1 non-posi.
You can look under TPI cars and usually find the australian 9 bolt, which was last used in some 1990 cars. After that, they all came with the 10-bolt.
Getting a '90-'92 axle for $75 is a cheap way to upgrade to 28 spline axles, too!
If you consider that most used posi's are rather worn, then maybe it's best to do a conversion locker. My personal favorite on a budget is the conversion locket into the rear from a '90-'92 V6 camaro/firebird with automatic. These are 28 spline, have the 1/8" larger ring gear, are virtually never abused, and nearly always have the original 3.42:1 gears.
