starter/flexplate problem.

Ok so i have a 168t flex plate with no counterweight on it, my stock 305 has a 153 t with a counter weight on it. I put a 355 into my 89 RS camaro and had to bu a diffrent starter for the bigger flexplate. But the starter doesnt throw out the gear far eneough to hit the flex plate teeth completly, it hits maybe 1/4 of the tooth on flexplate.

I have rounded off a couple teeth on the flexplate and my car is not driveable what should I do?

I beleive this motor is internally balanced but im not sure what should i look for? On my 305 the flexplate bolted to a perfectly round crank, on this 355 it has a hump on the end. I assume this is a built in counter weight?

If it matters i have a 2 piece rear main seal. and 3 holes for the starter to mount.

It would have been cheaper to get the 153 tooth flexplate.

That's usually a shimming problem.

Replace the flexplate and check your starter clearance.

It's not a built-in counterweight, it's just how the crank is.

Buy a flexplate of either diameter for any stock 2 piece RMS engine except a 400, and use it with the appropriate correctly-shimmed starter.

So internally or externally balanced???? does the flexplate i need have a counterbalance weight on it or not?

Re: starter/flexplate problem.

Im starting to think the flexplate may be on backwards, would this cause my starter to only hit 1/4 of the flexplate teeth. I just need it to reach out a little more when it enguages. This is really erking me to no end. This motor swap has been a bitch.

Forget about balance. The word you want to care about is "stock".

If the flexplate was on backwards, the torque converter wouldn't bolt to it.

Re: starter/flexplate problem.

It doesn't make a lick of difference if its a stock motor or not. Pick a random application that could have come with a 2 piece RMS small block, and get a stock flexplate for it. You've already got both starters, so there's no way you can get it wrong.
