Some simple questions...

Okay, in the matter of transmissions i'm retarded, to put it lightly. So, i have a 1984 camaro z28, with a 700r4 tranny. a few weeks ago my overdrive went out, big deal right? i just liked it for the power and didn't care about the gas milage (3000-3500 rpms at 60-68mph). but then my third gear went out, then my second gear. lol, i forgot to check my tranny fluid and had and leak and was running it practically dry, i mess some serious stuff up, i stupid, sorry. anyway, i found a 1991 camaro RS in good shape, but this kid is going to by it and part it out (idiot) anyway, hes just taking the motor and some body pieces, so i was thinking about buying the shell and the tranny and then swap the body pieces off my 84 to the 91, drop my 350 and the 91 transmission into it. and my 84's gears (3.73) into it. my question is, is the 91 tranny electric or anything like that that i need to know about? how hard is it to change gears? please help

The speedo is electric, not cable driven. But it wont really matter since your keeping the tranny in the 91. If you put the 91 tranny on your car, you would just have to remove the VSS and put your cable assembly in its place.

I would just swap out the whole rear assembly off you car and put it on the 91, easy.

oh nice, naw, i'm keeping the tranny in the 91, just swapping motors.
okay, how long would it take to swap the whole rear end? oh, just on the side note, from about 45 mph and up my rear end makes a kind of whinning sound, not too bad but it gets annoying, has done this for 4-5 months (since i had it)

Swapping the whole rear end is quicker and easier than swaping the gears themselves.

The dash's are totally different between the 91 and 84, so you would have to do a total dash swap to put the 91 gauges in your 84, or vice versa.

if that wouldn't work, how do i replace the VSS with cable?
You take the VSS out, put the cable assembly in it's place (easiest senerio)

------------------------------------

Alot of these questions could have been answered just by looking at these two cars and comparing the differences. I mean, you can look inside the cars and see the differences in the dash's. And if you look under the car, you can plainly see how the cable drive for the speedo and the VSS are mounted on the tranny, and that they are interchangable on the tailhousing.
