Posi install, will i have to realign the carrier?

I will be adding the SLP take off posi to an open rear. I will be keeping the same gears, just adding the posi unit. Can i just disassemble the carrier and reinstall it with the original shims or will i have to realign everything from scratch?

'just the posi unit' The posi unit is the carrier. With a different carrier, adjustments will probably have to be made.
If you want to keep your gears, a powertrax is a direct swap. You won't have to remove the gears or adjust anything. Just install it. By the time you install the slp, add a bearing kit, then some labor, maybe some axles--you end up spending about the same money. The powertrax ends up having more traction, easier to install, and much less headache.

If you just swap the carrier, you'll be fine.
Shim it up the same way it came out.The shims are for adjusting gear lash tolerances, not for the carrier.
Good luck.

Yeah, but nitro, he can't just assume that his new carrier is going to have the exact dimensions of his old one, and thus he should make sure to check it all first.
If there weren't so many precise dimensions involved in fitting gears then it wouldn't ever be necessary to shim, as all gears should have the same height from face to teeth, and all carriers should have the same dimensions race to race and race to ring face, etc.

Every carrier swap I have ever made without execption, if I left everything else the same and swapped teh carrier, life was good. The shims aren't there to adjust tolerance in the carrier (or the pinion either for that matter), the thing with the big tolerance is the housing.

So, as long as you have a 3 series gear now, the odds are very high in your favor that you can swap the carrier with no further effort required.

There are variences in carrier sizes, there no way around it. I would re-assemble as-is, and check everything. This includes backlash, and total turning pre-load. To find out more about building up the 10-bolt, go here: 10 bolt

Thanks everyone.

I called a local shop and they said they would swap them for me for $180-200. I thought that was reasonable concidering the set up kit was $100. I don't plan on doing this again so i am giving it to them.

Thanks again
