Gears simply change the ratio of the rpm that your motor turns to the speed your car is running, in simple terms. Lower gears (higher ratio number) usually make a car quite a bit quicker. Stock gears are generally for gas milage purposes. If your car has 273's, a set of 373's will probibly drop the 1/4 et down 35 tenths. It will cost about 250 in parts. A definate first mod choice for any car. Too low of a gear is also bad though. I run a 373 and it is the lowest I will go on an everyday driver steet machine. email me for more techinical info if you want.

The gears in the rear end determine the ratio of driveshaft revolutions, which in effect is engine revolutions, to wheel revolutions. More engine revs per wheel revs = more acceleration. Less engine revs per wheel rev = lower fuel consumption and emissions. Which one of these 2 choices is Detroit concerned with these days? That's why everybody on this BBS wants to change gears.
