RPM shifts points screwy, any Ideas?

RPM shifts points screwy, any Ideas?
Ok, my Z28 has the 5.0L HO L69 engine with the 700R4 trans. in it, when I hit the gas, unless I let off, the RPM will shoot up to around 6000 some. Something is defenatly wrong and I know its not my tack Ive checked that already. I need any Ideas or help anybody can offer, because thats just not a good thing. Thanks for your help in advance.
