Location of the larger copper checkball
Location of the larger copper checkball
Okay I just got finished rebuilding my 700R4 tranny and I'm installing a transgo shift kit. I followed all the steps and now I'm left with a larger copper checkball that was previosley installed in the transmission. Anyone know where this larger diameter checkball goes? I'm hoping to get this thing back together tonight so any help would be great. thanks.

Re: Location of the larger copper checkball
Mostly from memory, it is for the TV setup ('87 & up). If the cable breaks or is disconnected the check ball seats and the line pressure is increased. This prevents the trans from burning up due to lack of pressure.
The check ball goes onto the TV setup and is raised by a pin as the TV cable is pulled. A lot of folks leave it out, but I didn't see a reason to do so. As is I put it back in. Can't recall much else as it's been a while since I've had the trans open.

its so if ever the TV cable ever breaks, falls off or whatever, you can still drive the car to a certain extent. what it does is increases the pressure to engage some of the gears. since you still have the governor telling the trans how fast its going you dont get a complete loss of driveability but youll definately know somethings wrong.
if you lost the ball, which is what happens to alot of people when installing shift kits, you can just not put it in, and nothing will happen unless one day the cable breaks and youll be stranded

Re: Location of the larger copper checkball
Look at the valve body from the snail-trail side. On the TV side (passenger side, US) of the valve body is an area that juts out a little.
At the very end of it is a hole with a large chamfer. This is where the check ball with the copper flash goes.
You can double check this by placing the TV linkage onto the valve body. When the TV is pulled (throttle is opening) a pin rises up and pushes the check ball off of the seat (which is the hole with the chamfer).
