Quick!! What is the backlash tolerance for GM gears?
I am not changing the gears, but i am changing the carrier. The bashlash is at .009 (or .09, one of the two) Is that acceptable? Does anyone know the range it can be? I need this info by 5 pm tomorrow!

According to the Helm manual, it should be between .005 and .009 at the tightest point for new gears. Check 3 or 4 places around the ring gear. It should also not vary by more than .022. If it does, check for burrs, uneven torquing ordistortion of the case flange. For each .001 change in backlash desired, transfer .002 in shim thickness from one side to the other. Backlash is set with the carrier shimmed for a slip fit. Then .004 preload is added each side.
