transmission shifting late (video of problem)

hey guys i have a shifting problem on my car its a 88firebird formulaws62 #05 TBi 700r4.

the problem is that it shifts late, i accelerated hard out of a sharp turn and i heard a pop/thump when i did that. and shortly after this is what would happen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdvn1yNxvlA

the less effort i put into the pedal the longer it takes to shift. i can kick it up fast then take my foot off the pedal then it will shift but I'm not sure what happened a few friends have told me the TV cable must have broke but I'm not sure if they meant outside or inside because i tug and push on the cable from under the hood and it seems alright i have not yet look in def under the transmission but nothing is leaking. so please take alook at the short video i made and please help me out. thanx guys and if you need me to take video of anything else just send me some instructions and I'll compile another video thanx alot for any help.

I've never been very good at diagnosing transmissions but I was hoping some one would help me out

Re: transmission shifting late (video of problem)

first check your fluid, to make sure your at level. if not, fill up to level.

also

if you slam the accelerator down all the way and drive fast does it shift correctly or do you still have the problem?

see the governor builds up pressure depending on vehicle speed while the TV cable builds up pressure depending on engine load. this controls the shift timing

so in other words its one of those thats off, and thats causing your problem. so seeing as how checking the governor is kind of a hassle(lifting up the car and prying out the governor and checking it for wear)

what you can do is check that tv cable and see that its perfectly hooked up up the little valve at the bottom. also what u can do is give it alittle more slack, when the throttle is more closed than open the transmission will think that your not under hard acceleration therefor it wont keep you in a gear longer.

if ur going WOT it won't shift in OD until you get off the accelerator. Try just driving normal. and if it still does it. adjust the detent cable chk fluids. by adjusting the detent cable there is info somewhere on it no brainer to do.

to adjust it you just press on the "D" clip or whatever and slide the cable as far back to the rear and then let adjust on its own on WOT?

I did that but I was driving it right after I jumped it (cold engine) ...one morning. I took my tranny down to have it rebuilt to handle my 383 a few months ago, he said that the accumulator spring was broke or something... affecting some of my shifts

Re: transmission shifting late (video of problem)

check out a range reference chart of your transmission sometime. here you'll find that to get the 1-2 shift the 2-4 band is supposed to apply, obviously the forward clutches are holding in all forward gears, and the low roller drops off and the forward sprag is on. No shift occurs probably because the 2-4 band can't stop the reverse input drum (otherwise known as the band drum) from spinning so it never will complete the shift. High mileage 700r4's dish this drum and even if you install a new band it won't be able to hold on the new drum. Replacing the band and drum isn't that bad just pull the pan, filter, tcc solenoid, and auxilliary pipe. Pull the pump, release the band from the anchor with a pry bar, and pull the input and reverse input drums together. Replace the band drum and install everything in reverse order with a new pump o ring, pump gasket, and trans pan gasket. oh yeah pull the trans out first .

Re: transmission shifting late (video of problem)

While the broken accumulator spring has plagued every used 700R-4 I've ever had, I don't believe this is the problem. The spring being broken gets you a soft, mushy feel, and the shift seems to take 2-3 seconds rather than a more normal 1/2 second.

Re: transmission shifting late (video of problem)

well I thank you guys for your input, I was in the middle of adjusting the t.v. cable when my brother in law showed up and told me anyone can make something disappear with this method.... so we finally gave in and rolled our sleeves up and tore it apart, we ended up finding the accumulator spring in the pan. I got a few days off work so I'm just going to rebuild the blasted thing

Re: transmission shifting late (video of problem)

a broken accumulator spring should make some harsh shifts but probably not require a complete overhaul. Just replace the spring? Question? How did the spring get out of the accumulator housing? Wouldn't that break the housing? I've never seen that before. spos anythings possible on a planet that spins.

quick update seems the last guy the rebuilt this transmission decided to leave a spare spring in the pan, further inspection showed accumulator was alright governor was alright.....so guess what, 2nd gear was totally messed up. so I'm going to continue on my rebuild of the transmission building it a little
stronger, installing a corvette servo and shift kit......so what was going on is that the transmission was shifting perfect, just was not catching 2nd gear. alright guys thanks for any help and this will be my final post for this thread.
