JDMZ28,

Scroll down to my topic of Ripper Shifter help. I got a note in my box that said the shift stops are "redundant" and being phased out!! I guess yours is one of the first. At least your shifter handle was installed properly....... (I hope!!)

Cool I don't have to mess with it then. Yeah, I read your post, sucks man. Yeah, it's in correctly, I got the trans in my garage right now (back from the trans shop), I just put the shifter on to see how it works. I think I'm going to like it. Not sure if the throws were reduced much. Trans, shifter, poly torque arm bushing are going in on saturday.

Is that a bad thing mine doesn't have the gear stops? It feels pretty firm without them. What do you think? I would think that they are a little excessive. I doubt they would negate the quality of there product.

JDMZ28,

I guess it's not that bad a thing. I'm just confused why all the sudden they decide the stops aren't needed. Took them a few years to figure that out!! I tried it without them installed. It shifted fine and still had a good feel. It does feel a bit more solid with them in, so I used them. Nothing to lose sleep over!

The shift stops are only adjusted in 2nd and 3rd gear. They stop the handle in any gear though. The handle contacts the same stop for 3rd and 5th as 1st.

I agree with you on the shift throw. I'm a little disappointed with the length of it. Then again, I guess there's only so much you can do with a steel rod!

On another note ...... Do you have e-check? I wouldn't mind switching to carburation on my motor, but I fear of failing e-check. Just wondering ........

no, no e-check, they stopped a few years ago. My car would fail miserably otherwise.

I don't have the stops either, and I've had the Ripper for, perhaps, a year. I love the shifter and would never consider going back to stock. The feel is firm and sure, and I didn't experience any unwonted road noise.

I put a Ripper in my 1983 Z28 several years ago and it had the proper stops in the collar, which contacted the square part of the stick, so that the lever travelled the same amount in the 1-2 and 3-4 throws. When I got another Ripper for my 1985 IROC a year ago, it had a thinner collar on top and the stops were in the lower housing, where they contacted the round part of the stick, so the travel was a bit different in the 1-2 and 3-4 throws. It also had a note saying the stops were unnecessry and were being phased out. In my opinion that's a load of BS and in fact it's a cost reduction measure. If I recall, there was a period of a few months before the new style shifter came out that these shifters were out of stock everywhere. The new one has a lower quality finish on the stick and I found the 1-2 gate spring was weak on mine and I had to shim it with a couple of flattened 1/4" lockwashers. It now works just as well as the old one did, but it *IS* more cheaply made. Since I didn't adjust the stop screws I notice a "hissing" noise if I keep pushing on the lever after going into 3rd gear, which tells me that a stop would help. To adjust the screw now would require lifting the console to get the boot screws out, unless I can get at it from underneath.
