need a new rear end, Suggestions??

title says it all

my pinion gear decided to come out the side of my axle so here i am needing a nex axle

i can get an 3.23 rear out of a Z28 that i think is an LSD rear (how can i tell my looking at it or moving the wheels in the air, i cant remember how to tell to save my life) for somewhere in the ball park of $50

or should i go to a you pull it and get a $50 open diff and put a LSD in it and some 3.23 gears

or YOUR IDEA

Id say go and find a 4th gen LS1 rear. Upgrade your brakes and get a newer rear end at the same time. Should not cost any more than 400$ max. Otherwise i say just buy the 3.23 rear and put in some new internals and such.

Do you have disc brakes or drum? Would you be interested in this?

If he were to install a 4th gen 10 bolt his wheels would stick out about 2 inches on each side and might rub the body. Is that 3.23 that your talking about from a 90-92 z? If so its a 28 spline and is a bit stronger than the earlier one. Even if its a 26 spline from an earlier z its still not a bad deal for 50 bones. I would grab it and see if the posi is still good (might get lucky). If its not a buy a new eaton.

Rolling your fenders solves that problem with the 4th gen rear. Im running a 95Z rear with stock 15 inch rims and i rubbed for a week, rolled the fenders and now i have no problems.

Re: need a new rear end, Suggestions??

keeping stock wheels with 255/60/15's or 245/60/15's is a must

the rear i may be getting is out of an 83 Z28 with 3.23's will probably get it rebuilt if i buy it

if its an open diff then im going with an eaton LSD

if i get the 4th gen rear will i think the 255's would rub, unless Saber can tell me he is runing bigger than stock (215/65/15) on his setup

also wouldnt i have to change out the master cyl or the prop valve if i got 4th gen

this one i may be getting would be a drum to drum swap, would give it the stock look (since its an 89 RS with factory drum) but give me the LSD and somewhat better gears

I know my tires are bigger than stock i am just running the bigger tires on stock rims, there sure as hell not 215's. But as to what exactly they are is escaping me for some reason, ill check tomorrow when i pick it up from the mechanics. But im almost positive 255's would rub somewhat, the pic i posted with mine has them tucked real nicely and i think if i was to go bigger than it wouldnt work. And you dont have to change the master, just the prop since your a disk/drum car if the rear has disks. Also im not sure if this will affect you, but i know that before 84 the brakes had different fitting sizes, might want to look into that if its going to cause any problems for you im not sure if it was just on the disks or not.
