How can you tell if a carrier is 2 series or 3? It's an Auburn unit from an '89 IROC.

What gear ratio did it come with? If it was above 3.08 from the factory than it's a 3-series carrier, 3.08 or below is a 2-series carrier. If it has aftermarket gears, you can't tell that way. Richmond I know makes all gears for either carrier.

The difference is the location of the ring gear flange. It you set it on end with the flange at the lower end, a 2-series one will have the flange about ¼" lower than a 3-series one. I don't know the exact dimensions though. If you can find a known ne to compare it to, it should be obvious.
