Did it take 3? that seems like too much to me, but I don't remember. I was thinking it was under 2. pull out the plug on the side and fill it until it comes out.
That's brings me to another point altogether. since our T5's are slanted we're actually overfilling them a little...right? not that the few extra millimeters (milliliters) of fluid should make much difference. I build gearboxes for road racing cars. the theory there is don't put in too much or you'll cause excess heat. of course, too little will cause heat too. oh well, go with the plug thing.

I used ATF last summer when I did the clutch and when I pulled it 3 weeks ago it was purple. My trans man told me to use Gear oil, it has something to do with the syncros. I'm sure that's not a big issue though.
I keep getting different answers on how much to use, my local auto parts store told me to add 2, others tell me 2.5,and 1.5. I have no idea. I put in about 2.75 and have had no problems. The one thing I have noticed is a little whine while in 5 gear, only under pressure (while under acceleration and deceleration). I highly doubt that has anything to do with over filling though.
I think I'll put it up in the garage and pull the plug. The reason it might not have drain out when I was filling it might be because I poured it in by the shifter, it might not have worked it's way down until I drove it around. If I pull the plug and nothing comes out I'm not going to worry, it can't take more than 3 quarts. I also vaguely remember it taking about 3 last time I filled it. Thanks guys

From what i understand, pre 88 meaning 87-back used gear lube, 88+ used ATF.
