Trouble driving in snow..

My TA is ridiculously terrible in the least bit of snow. Took me an hour to get up my driveway and it will fish tail out of no where. What is the best way to add better control? Snow tires?

The best way to add control is to jack it up and put it in storage. But if you have to drive in the winter get some studed tires. Other than that you better pray everytime you turn the key.All camaros and firebirds suck in the snow.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

Most RWD cars without some sort of traction control are horrible in slick conditions. Usually because of the lack of weight at the point of where power is placed. Even my underpowered 81 toyota corolla (also rwd) can easily spin it's tires in 3rd gear on icy roads. My suggestion to go along with some snow tires would maybe add a sandbag or two in the back. Might seem silly, but will probably help a little if you must drive in snowy conditions.

Traction control sucks in the snow, or at least it does in the new Mustangs. Guy I know couldn't get his car out of the driveway till he turned traction control OFF.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

Like the others said, these cars are pretty scary in snow. I drove mine only one winter, sliding, fishtailing etc.
I got hold of a full time 4wd jeep for snow duty....then I moved where it doesn't snow.

If you have no other choice and depending on what size rims/tires you have, either, studded snow tires or chains for the really nasty stuff.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

these car suck in the rain, not to mention snow!

When i was using my car as a DD, if there was any snow on the ground, as soon as i backed out of the garage and the tires hit the snow, the car would stop moving and the wheels would just spin. you could get out and watch, go inside make coffee come back out and it would still be there.

Get a daily honestly. Camaros and firebirds suck in the snow and even rain. I drive an 83 subaru daily. Never lets me down, gets 30 mpg and goes through anything it needs to. 2wd 5 speed.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

Options in order of cost (highest to lowest)

1) Winter vehicle (beater)
2) Snow tires
3) Chains

These options also just happen to be listed in order of most practicality as well. I'd jump on Craigslist and find a beater with FWD at minimum.

P.S. Totally off subject here, but when I lived in Pittsburgh my dumb neighbor put his snow tires on the BACK tires of his FWD Honda ... and he would argue with me to the death that it was right.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

I have owned 7 of them and drove to the snow skiing once a week for 5 years. i used stock tires and chains. i would not do that now, but i did then. it worked ok but you need a jack and chains.
but the other idea was best.
PARK IT UNTIL WINTER IS OVER~!

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

I've got an 87 with a v6/auto for a winter beater and with 4 quality winter radials I can drive almost anywhere. On the other hand my lowered 86 IROC with the 255 T/A's gets stuck in a parking lot.
Seriously, the winter tires (not all seasons) make a huge difference. One thing I like is that the Camaro is very predictable in the snow and it's fun to drive.

It would be fun to drive my camaro in the winter, but i don't want it to get rusty. Which is why i got a grand am with a 5 speed for my winter beater.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

We don't get snow much in MS, but it did snow a couple weeks ago, slid all over the place. Put a couple cinderblocks in the back. It was better but I still don't trust it. It sucks but I drive my 85 vette when weather gets bad. I bought the camaro at first to be a "DD beater", then I fell in love with it, put new engine in it, spend every dime on it, and now the beautiful c4 vette gets stuck in parking lots and sets out in the rain while my beater Z-28 gets to be in the garage and gets all my attention. LOL

I live in Alaska and i drive my bird religiously. Snow or not.... Even with no studs, and my hood off ( that's another story ). I do have a posi rear, and i know how to correct a slide ( or use it to my benefit ). Has anyone seen how drifters drive? It's not that hard. -Russ

Drove my car through several winters on winter tires and all seasons. Miserable experience and a bit of rust to show for it My advice is the same as most, get a winter beater.

Driving sideways down the street is kinda fun though

He was right. 4 winter tires is best, but if you absolutely have to run only 2, you want the best traction on the rear wheels to keep it under control while you're cornering.

Wow... Didnt see that one coming.

I would have thought you wanted the best traction under your primary drive tires. Kinda hard to corner if you cant get it rolling in the first place.

Thank the lord F-bodys are rear drive.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

When I was in Germany with my car, I had snow tires on it, and it wasnt bad. I remember one night my buddy was driving my car with 4 of us in it home from the bar, and there was 2-3 inches of snow. It was an open rear end too.
Get some snow tires! Studded would be good too.

I have a couple hundred pounds of iron from my weight bench that might serve well sometime.

I think chains are a terrible idea. Your talking about a small amount of snow. Ever drive something with chains and little snow?

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

Well up here in winterpeg, I drove my Firebird for one winter, and what a scary experience! To make it better, I bought used winter tires from my brother, two big bags of sand and put them in the back (The added weight helps with grip in the back + plus if you ever get stuck, you can throw some sand around the tires that are stuck for added traction). After that winter, I bought a 700$ mercury topaz with 4WD (yes the mercury topaz and ford tempo came with 4WD) and now I drive worry free through this winter!

Driven my Camaro in the snow a couple times, wasn't fun but still got where I needed to go. Really glad I have a 4x4 so I don't have to drive the car

I gotta agree, my roommates love driving with me when its wet outside. I think I spend about 1/2 my time driving sideways. I drove my 91 RS the first winter I bought it and vowed to never do that again. So that summer I went out and bought a nice big 4x4 truck. I cant wait for the weather to get nice so I can pull the Camaro outta the garage again.

Not getting it rolling is safer than not being able to control it. It's hard to crash a car if you can't get it to move. Getting the car moving is never the problem, stopping it or changing direction is. That's something that suburbanites in their 4wd SUVs never figure out until they wipe it out a few times.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

I said it before and I'll say it again.
With four quality snow tires (and this is for a 3rd that's not heavily modified) you can drive that thing almost anywhere. Deep snow isn't a problem and it's like driving a rally car on the back roads. Even a stock suspension is capable of giving delivering very predictable performance in the snow.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

Okay, excuse me while I finish buttoning up my flame suit V-6 Firebird and 5-speed, 50 lbs. wt in the trunk and a full tank of gas, plus 4 Nokian snow/ice tires. I go just as well as the 4X4's. Only exception is if the snow gets any deeper than 4-5 inches - then I'm a snow plow , unless you take a run at the drifts.

Seriously, if you have a lot of torque at the rear wheels and the light back end, you are doomed before you start. On the other hand, my combination up above and I have had no problems - other than those people who think that an all-season tire is the same as a "snowie"

Best regards.

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

I'm telling you guys, tires are everything! We've already had a hell of a winter here, and I haven't had a single problem getting around in my trusty old 3rd gen! I run your typical 16x8 Iroc rims in the summer with the standard 245/50/16 tires, but I wouldn't even attempt to leave my driveway with that setup during the winter! I've got a set of the standard 15x7 f-body rims with Firestone Winterforce 215/65/15 snow tires mounted on them for winter driving. I got the tires for like 50 bucks a piece off Tirerack.com. I'm tellin ya, I pass up probably 75% of the SUV's around here when there's snow on the road, and my car's mannerisms are completely predictable, and it's quite sure-footed. Like GTA50 said, if the snow happens to get really deep, you end up being a snowplow due to such little ground clearance, but other than that, no worries. I've owned my 3rd gen since 1995, and I've driven it every single winter without issue. I don't even put any extra weight in the back. Just 4 good snow tires and a posi rear, and it's golden. For a rear-wheel-drive car, I'm amazed at how well it goes in the snow! We had a big storm on X-mas night, and I left my brother's house at 2 a.m. The plows weren't out yet, and there was about 6 inches of snow on the road. There was two cops parked on the side of one of the main roads, and you shoulda seen the look on their faces when I went chuggin by in my Camaro! So yeah, just get a cheap set of 15x7 rims, put on a good set of "true" snow tires, and you'll be fine.

ok so im only driving my ta until september when I go to england for three years so im trying to spend as less money as possible. snow tires will run me over $200, but I thought chains were illegal because they ruin the pavement.

LMAO you guys are funny, Camaro's are perfectly fine in the snow with proper tires, been driving them in the winter for years

Run 225/60R16 winter tires like Blizzacks and your good to go, if you got a 15" rim then the stock size 215/65R15's

Wash the salt off every few day's or she will rot on you in a hurry

Re: Trouble driving in snow..

I drive my 85 Z28 with few problems. The ones I have are cause of the crappy tires I have (the fact the rears are almost bald might have something to do with it...). I don't have any weights in the back or anything. You just have to be smart about it and remember your not on pavement.
