What gears work good for a 700r4?
I need to replace an axil shaft so I am considering switching gears also. What gears will give the best peformance. And is it better to go with posi traction or the limited slip. How hard is it to make it a posi traction rear end?

Its hard to say what is the best gears for performance. It depends if you're a daily driver, all track or both. What kind of car do you have now? Tell us more info about your car's drivetrain. Auto/Manual? Posi-traction is the same as limited slip (just different wording). How well do you want your car to perform?

The car is 91 RS. I just had a 700r4 put in and it is bone stock. The car is a daily driver but mainly used to go to school and back.(St. Louis to Mississippi). The car does not have posi traction. There is only the one wheel motion when you try to lay a patch down the road. Also who makes a good posi unit for cheap.

SLP makes a good takeoff posi unit for $99 (Zexel Torsen). With that, you can slap whatever gears you want and you'll burn both tires when you lay it down. I belive the unit is for 26 splines. You're driving from St. Louis to Mississippi? I would definately go with gears between 2.73 to 3.42. It'll be better on gas.

Slp Zexel torsen is 28 splines just like your 91 RS. www.slponline.com. 732-349-2109 ext 121 ask for Joe. They are putting their OEM unit on sale next week for $74.99. I ordered their GM 3.42 gears (I wanted the nice quiet factory kind) + installation kit and the speedo gears too. That is the setup I have ordered to put in my 91 5.0L RS convertible.
