Will a 9bolt posi-trac work in a 10 bolt?

I have a 10 bolt I can get for free, but it has an open differental. I want to go with lower gears than the 9 bolt has to offer, so I am trying to see what my options are. Is there anything I can do with this 10 bolt that isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg? I would love to stay with the 9 bolt, but 3.70's are as low as they go, plus a ring and pinion set is pretty high. any advice would be great, thanks.

9 bolt and 10 bolt internal parts are not interchangeable.

If you lived by me I would pay you to trade with me I just got 4.11 gears and I have a almost new posi but, would like a 9 bolt with 3.70 gears. my 10 bolt needs new bearings but, the 4.11 will need the in stall kit so no problem really just steeper gears than I wan't

Ratios to 4.11 are soon to be available.

As soon as I finish the 3.73 (not 3.70) install on my car, I am going to install the 4.11 in another 9 bolt I have. If all goes well (there is some tricks that need to be done) I will have some available. Also, new series 3 posi carriers will be available.

Currently installing 3.73's into my 9 bolt (YES,it is a 9 bolt & YES they are 3.73's, not 3.70. 4.11's to follow soon )

I just found out today that GM performance has gears for a 9 bolt that go all the way up to 4.10's . The gears are a little pricey, but it will still be a little cheaper than buying a 10 bolt, buying a new ring & pinion, bearings and shims. I guess I will stick with the 9 bolt after all. thanks for the info anyway.

Is it true about the 9bolt being only slightly stronger than the 10bolt rear? If so,all of that extra money dosen't seem to be worth it to me!!The ford rear is a whole lot stronger than either GM rears! keep what u have in there unless u can find a 9 bolt dirt cheap & upgrade it!

There are 9-bolts in the 10 and 11 second range, where a 10-bolt wouldnt last there. 9-bolts are plenty strong but they're not indestrucible.
