I purchased this GM 7.5 10 bolt carrier w/ a 3.42 ring and pinion on E bay. The seller described it as a governor lok type. Are these stock units or aftermarket? How do these compare to traditional posi's. When these items arrived in the mail I could not believe how small they were. Hard to believe they can take the power applied to them.

 

That would be an Eaton Gov-Lock. They come in S-10s. You're right about their power handling capability, it's negligible, they tear up even in the S trucks. They're not intended for use in a high-perf situation. They're supposed to function like an open diff until the difference in RPM between the 2 axles reaches some value, like 120 RPM or so, at which point the little weights fly out and lock the clutches up. The weights themselves don't actually transmit the power. But the clutches are pretty small.

Thanks RB83L69, So would you say it's pointless installing this unit in an Lg4 Trans Am . Would it make much difference over the open 2.73's I now have.

 

If it's used, chances are it's worn out.

I don't think it would be very wise. They're not made for that kind of use. They're made for a low-speed, low-traction application like a 4-wheel drive. You will probably be right back in there replacing it again soon if you put it in.

Hey RB83L69, Is the Eaton gov-loc and Eaton positive loc the same posi. Idid a classifieds search out of curiosity to see if I could find one that had sold and sure enough there it was with photo. Looks like mine does. However this guy selling it (GONIC GM) Praised it as one of the best over Auburn posi's. Could I possibly have something here worth installing?

 

Post a pic or a link to the other one, maybe somebody can ID it. I'd know the one I'm talking about if I saw a pic of what's inside the window in the carrier.

The Gov-lock was a factory option for all (I think) GM vehicles with the 7.5" diff. I picked up an '84 WS6 TA that came with that wonderful posi unit. They sure do LOOK fragile, I tend to believe people that claim to have blown them up with ease.

The solution is to get the SLP take-off Zexel torsen diff. They're only $75.00 right now, and sure do look way tougher than the gov-lock! I got one for my Camaro and S-10 pickup. Our Bravada came stock with a gov-lock, but I doubt that'll ever be strong enough to give it any grief

 

guys I did the classified search here on thirdgen classifieds under "posi". I'm too young at this to post a web address that can be clicked on. Maybe I will get some instruction on that some day. Well, if this posi and gears are no good might as well try to install them myself. That way I wont have to worry about them being put in to perfectly, knowing that the days are numbered on'em
