The converter has to be put on the transmission before lifting it in. Be careful not to let it slip off the shaft while you're lifting or the seals will probably get torn.

yeah there is no way you'll ever get the convertyer to line up without taking it off the flex plate.

MAKE SURE THE CONVERTOR IS FULLY SEATED!

When you have the bellhousings mating together (trans & engine), with a few hand-tightened bolts holding them together, make sure your convertor's seated. You should be able to slide the torque convertor forward/back along the input spline of the transmission, while the trans is bolted to the engine. So, this means you (1) removed the TC from the engine flywheel and put it onto the input shaft of the trans (lube that area of the TC with some trans fluid), (2) have a few trans-to-engine bolts screwed in hand-tight, and (3) didn't have the torque convertor bolted to the flexplate.

If the torque convertor is mashed hard against the flywheel, STOP! You didn't seat the TC all the way into the trans. There's an extra set of splines on the tranny's input shaft that you have to catch in the torque convertor. This is because the 700r4 uses lockup TC's. Unbolt the trans from the engine, slide it back, and spin the TC until it catches the second set of splines.

Remember; before you bolt the TC to the flexplate, the TC should be able to slide towards/away from the flexplate. Otherwise, you'll damage the TC and trans in one twist of the ignition key!
