What is this banging noise

I just bought an 83z28 and I am pretty sure that it was beatup from the previous owner. I was more interested in the body and did not care about the motor as I have a 350 to replace it with. I had to have the car trailed to my place as it was not safe to drive. I replaced the tires, replaced shocks, got the motor to run and then I took the car out for a test drive. As I acccelerated heard a medalic like sound and also when I took my foot off the gas pedal. the sound was like a hammer striking medal. The is a tranny is a manual. Not sure whaqt the noise was I did not get out of fisrt gear. It happens in 1st and reverse.

any thoughts?

Sounds a bit like a wasted U-joint, or something under the car loose such that the drive shaft can hit it.

I did jack up the tranny to check for a loose mount. The mount did not appear to be loose as the tranny and the motor lifted together.

Gman,
It sounds like your transmission mount is shot. You wont be able to see just by looking at it but when you unbolt it from the x member and transmission chances are it will fall apart
cheers

this is probably NOT your problem, but one that I had, so you might check it out. when I got my '83 it seems some monkey had replaced the gearbox with a junkard unit. when they shot the top bolt for the torque arm mount they stripped it out. this let the torque arm come out of its mount and hit the tunnel. a very disconcerting noise with any torque change.
just one to check out
Clem

Get a polyeurathane replacement if you can, I highly recommend it.
