I have a 92 firebird V6 3.1L, and it was running fine. but one day i had to take my girlfriend to work and i didn't want to go fast. the rpm was going up but my mph wasn't goin anywhere. it wouldn't go past 40. and you could it rev, but not do anything. some people said it's the transmission, but other say it's just the transmission filter and to change the fluid. any other advice? it would be greatly appreciated.

 

Try changing the fluid and filter.. Is the fluid dark when you remove the dipstick?

 

yeah it's really dark.

 

Does it smell "Burnt" smell the dipstick and see. If it is really dark, then you are probably going to need a rebuild (Frictions are probably gone)

 

i didn't smell it, but it was really dark.

 

Take this as a lesson. Change your tranny fluid and filter every 35,000 miles. I don't care what the owners manual says, change it anyways. Anytime you buy a used car, change it, because it's most likely never been done.

 

t.v. cable may have come disconnected. governor gear plastic may have apple cored or broke off, t.v. valve may be stuck(not to be confused with plunger), and or shot at and missed **it at and hit.

 

Maybe the torque converter is warn out. and for sure on the oil change and filter all the time. good luck

 

I change mine every 6 months. The car only gets driven about 2500 miles a year and someone once told me that tranny fluid absorbs moisture... Better safe than sorry... Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

 

thanks guys, i couldn't go out and check it today. we just got 13in. of snow. im going to shovel it off tomorrow morning and see what's cooking. i'm also taking it up to my school whenever it opens back up (school closed because of the snow)

 

Well I know I haven't been posting in a long time. Well come to find out I needed a new transmission. So I found this little shop where they were selling my transmission for only $200!!! So of course I grabbed it right away. And it's currently in the shop getting the transmission installed. Thanks for the input.

 

if thats a rebuilt trans for $200 ..then GOODLUCK with that

 

I was correct? Shot at and missed, **it at and hit. You could probably sell your old core and recoup the cost of the new?,Used?,rebuilt?, transmission.
