Lost 5th and Reverse in my T-5.. Help

Okay so i have the borg warned t5 tranny and have lost 5th gear and reverse. Is this an easy fix and how would I go about doing it? The local tranny shop wanted almost 200 just to look at it and said repairs at minimum would probably be 600 (this would include the diagnostic they said for $200).. i can get another t5 for around $300-$400 but id rather just try to fix this if possible. The car is a daily driver and not raced..

you didnt screw with the torx on the side did you? (says THIS IS NOT A DRAIN PLUG) on it? thats what holds 5th and reverse if i remember correctly, its an easy fix if your up to it, if you have the WC itll be even easier to disassemble, my first time i just used a blown up diagram of one and just tore into it

if its loose its gone, when you take it apart remember to lay it in pieces EXACTLY how you got them, you wont be tearing down the main shaft but its better safe than sorry

There is a clip on the other end of that bolt. Unless it came off the linkage should still be on it. It could also be a broken shift fork. I have seen them break before. They are made of cast aluminum and aren't too strong. There are actually many things that could have gone wrong. There is a lot of linkage that goes to 5th and reverse.

Re: Lost 5th and Reverse in my T-5.. Help

Yeah. I was changing my valve covers the other day and changed the oil while i was at it and was looking at the transmission since i was under there and notice the bolt look as if it were about to fall out.. thinking it was just a drain plug i tried to tighten it but i couldnt find the torx socket so i left it.. im glad i asked about this and found out what it is. Its a pain not having reverse.. 5th i can do without i dont do alot of highway driving but im sure itd be nice to have it lol.

How do i find out if i have the world class t5? It's a carbed 2.8 with a t5.. (factory setup).. what is the best way to diagnose the problem?

I'd say that you are going to have to remove the transmission and partially disassemble it. You have to remove the shifter, knock out the pin that holds the shifter block to the shaft, remove the extention housing and then remove the cover. Then you will be able to see the internal linkage.

Re: Lost 5th and Reverse in my T-5.. Help

Yours should be a non-WC T5 since Camaros didn't get the WC units until 1988. Before you tear down the whole trans, you could get the proper torx socket and try to tighten that bolt back up. Who knows, it might pull the 5th/Reverse linkage back into place to where it engages again. If not, then yeah, it'll be disassembly time. Btw, any jackweed shop that'd charge $200 just to "diagnose" a puny T5 manual trans deserves to go outta business! Automatics are fairly complicated, but there's nothing to most manual trannys.
