shifting question

I have an 89 Iroc 305TPI auto and it shifts from 3rd to 4th gear at 5000RPM's and that is the redline. Is this normal or is there something wrong. Also when i get on it it shifts real hard and the tires break loose. I was thinking maybe the guy i bought it from put a shift kit in or maybe they just break loose cause i have about 5% tread on the back. LOL.

When it shifts at 5000 rpm is it a hard or soft shift. IF it is hard then it may be an adjustment to the TV cable or a shift kit like you said. As for chirping them in 2nd that might be because of the power output of your engine.

probably just needs the cable adjusted, thats all. it does have a shift kit if i shifts hard in every gear.

Sounds to me like your tv cable isn't hooked at all.The trans defaults to max line pressure when the tv is unhooked, kind of feels like a shift kit from hell.If it looks ok at the throttle end,i'd say it's unhooked or broke at the trans end.

If you are saying tht it shifts at 5000 RPM at WOT then that is normal for your 305. If it shifts at that point at all times then it is likely that the cable is disconnected or way missadjusted.

As far as the 1-2 bark, this is pretty common on these but you also might have a broken 1-2 accumulator spring (also common).

yeah depends on your tire size hehehe. my old 305 would bark 1-2 shifts when there were 215/60/R15's on the back. when i went to 255/60/R15's it stopped doing it. i went back to the 215's hehehe. this is a completelly stock car (was) now its being re-done. so's my other one. heck they are never O.K. the way you get em'
