Leaking rearend...

My buddy's got an 87 Iroc with the disc brake rear end.. recently it started making a large clunk everytime he burned out. Also, there is some fluid leaking from it. I would love input from you guys as to what the possibilities of problems could be for it, and any possible remedies. Thanks!
Jon
PS, never done anything to a rearend before, so keep all the terminology simple.

Check the fluid level and make sure its full first. Leaking rear-end probably means he just needs a new gasket for the cover.
