If you are losing 2nd gear, then the 2-4 band is going away fast. For you not having 4th gear as you mentioned earlier, it is possible the TV cable was set incorrectly. If it was, you would have noticed that the 1-2 & 2-3 shifts were very late at light throttle openings. If this was the case, then the TV cable was out of adjustment (too tight).
